Involved in change? You’re Invited to Join the 2015 Business Analysis Summit

This year’s summit, from 23rd-25th November and 30th November – 1st December 2015, will feature short interviews with world-class experts and authors, one each day throughout the summit, along with the ability to interact. The theme this year is ‘Virtual working in a Changing World’ and this summit is combined with the Virtual Working Summit this year. The Business Analysis Summit is a unique chance for you to develop your skills, without the need to travel. There is no charge to register to listen in to each speaker via the web each day, at a time to suit you, and to join in the discussions. Previous years have had themes such as “Trends in Business Analysis” (2014), “Business Analysis and Leadership” (2013), “Tough skills for a changing world” (2012), “The BA working with…” (2011).

Who should attend? Those working on improving business through changing processes, systems, organisational structure and/or infrasture. Those interested in delivering solutions that fits the needs of their organisations. Your title could be business analyst, project manager, programme manager, requirements engineer, business architect, business process manager, product manager, Lean or SixSigma specialist, or even business systems analyst, amongst many other things. Why a Business Analysis Summit? In a time of unprecedented change and with the economy turning the corner, the chance for business analysis to make a difference is bigger than ever. But it’s not easy, with so many barriers in your way:

    Penny Pullan: Virtual Leadership of Change 23rd November

    Dr Penny Pullan is your BA Summit Host. She will kick-off your summit on 23rd November with a session introducing her new Virtual Leadership model and then answering your questions on how apply virtual leadership in a range of tricky situations that a BA might face!

    Penny has worked with thousands of business analysts over the past nine years, across industry sectors from banking and finance, through to telecoms and pharmaceuticals. She enjoys making a difference with people grappling with tricky projects. Tricky means anything from risky, with ambiguous requirements, to having disinterested stakeholders, probably with a team dispersed around the world. If that’s your world, that’s where Penny is too.
    Penny is a director of, Making Projects Work Ltd, and she has hosted the BA Summit since 2010. She is the co-editor of the book: ‘Business Analysis and Leadership: Influencing change‘ and she’s writing her next book on Virtual Leadership solo, also to be published by Kogan Page.     Mark Lewing and John Stuart-Clarke: Remote Co-Location for Developing Software in an Agile Way

    In large organisations, it’s not always possible for Agile teams to be co-located. Sometimes, team members sit hundreds or even thousands of miles apart. To be successful with remote teams, you need to use collaboration tools and share your information online. Aviva have been working on this for a few years and, at the start, remote teams made Agile development much harder. Now, though, Aviva’s remote teams work effectively on Agile developments and they find that these remote teams can even help people to work better together. But how did they do it? Mark and John will explain how using a combination of technology use and changing their approach to some aspects of development have led to success.

    Mark is a Senior Business Analyst at Aviva. He has been working on Agile projects for the last few years, and all of them have involved remotely located teams. Mark is passionate about developing skills of BAs and working in a way that suits the task at hand over following a framework because you have to.

    John Stuart-Clarke is a highly-experienced senior business analyst, with a successful track record of delivering the benefits discovery, pre-project approval & requirements management phases of large, complex change programmes for a number of large enterprises, including Aviva, Informa, Tech Data and Sony. Recently, John’s work has focused on embedding agile ways of working into Aviva UK’s General Insurance change function and effective data governance into the wider business.

    Mark and John co-presented a workshop at the Business Analysis Conference Europe this year on the topic of ‘Remote Co-location’, showcasing some of the techniques and concepts that have allowed Aviva to be successful.

    Priya E. Abraham: How to cyber-connect – how to increase your virtual productivity through identity

    In our virtual world of work, we all switch between the physical world and the digital world seamlessly. But how does our identity change and how can that help to build connections with remote colleagues?

    In this fascinating session, cyber-anthropologist Dr Priya E. Abraham will explore the various strands of identity that we can use to build strong connections with others across boundaries. We all have a range of tangible and intangible identity elements coexisting and, once you know more about these, you can adjust each one to help you connect with others.

    This session will give you new insights into your own personal identity map and help you gain a new perspective on how to connect effectively with people worldwide.

    Grace Marshall

    Grace Marshall: How to be really productive when you are working virtually 1st December

    Grace Marshall recently wrote the book ‘How to be REALLY productive: achieving clarity and getting results in a world where work never ends’, published by Pearson. Her session will answer your questions on how you can be productive when remote from your colleagues. She’s happy to cover any areas but suspects that most will be in areas such as:

  • how to walk the tightrope between being available to communicate and constantly distracted;
  • how to stop email from taking over your day;
  • maintaining momentum and cohesion to maximise team productivity;
  • how do you measure productivity: by impact or by hours?
  • It all depends on what you ask her questions about!

    Listening via browser was easy, did not seem to require any special tool. Flexibility to hear the broadcast any time during the day (I listened in at home in the evenings e.g. while cooking, even in bed just before sleeping, or during lunch break at work). Thought the breadth of topics from different angles was interesting and refreshing, especially enjoyed the Agile one! Very interesting how many speakers converged on the same opinions regarding role and future of BA, key skills etc – good food for thought for me.

    This is an excellent idea. I greatly appreciate the amount of work that you muit have put into organising it. The role of a Business Analyst is an extremely important and responsible one. Anything that encourages quality and enables us to work better is to welcomed. In the past I have done a lot of work on the development of right first time systems development methodology.
